Greek Tourism Modernism (EOT)

Also known as Greek modernist tourism posters, EOT (GNTO) posters of the 1960s

The modernist image of Greece made for the National Tourism Organisation (EOT) by Michalis Katzourakis, its art adviser in 1960-1967, and by Frederick Carabott, who advised it until 1967; in 1962 the two also founded the K&K Athens Advertising Centre. A poster sets one Hellenic sign (a photographed relief, vase or statue, a Byzantine dome) on flat saturated colour or, full-bleed, a mosaic or a woven ship, under the country's name, often one lowercase word in bold sans: grèce, greece. After 1967 photography gradually took over, but other designers kept the manner going at EOT under the junta.

Use it with care

Many of these posters picture Byzantine churches and monasteries, such as Mystras and island chapels, that remain active Orthodox sacred places, and borrow woven and mosaic motifs from living regional crafts: use them with that weight, not as interchangeable 'Greek' decoration. The style is also a state nation-branding image made for foreign visitors, and other designers went on making EOT posters in this manner, beside colour photography, under the 1967-1974 military dictatorship, so do not present its sunlit antiquity as a neutral picture of Greece. Commercial reuse of photographs of Greek monuments and museum antiquities also needs permission from, and a fee to, the Greek state (Law 4858/2021, article 46), so clear any statue, relief or site photograph before using it in new work.

01

How it works

  • Isolate one Hellenic sign, such as a photographed relief, vase, statue or Ionic capital, a Byzantine dome, a boat or the sun, on an unmodulated field of saturated colour, and let the empty field carry the poster.
  • Treat photographs of antiquities as graphic material: cut them out, posterise them to black on a single colour, mirror them, or repeat one as photograph, white silhouette and black silhouette.
  • Abstract the place instead of painting a picturesque view: build a harbour from cut-paper rectangles, an island from mosaic tesserae and a ship from woven stripes.
  • Name the country in one word in the language of the market, either in lowercase bold sans (grèce, greece, griechenland) or in widely spaced roman capitals (GRÈCE, GREECE), and cut every other line down to a festival title and dates.
  • Work in two or three flat inks drawn from sea and sun (ultramarine, sun yellow, vermilion, orange, with black), and keep full polychrome for mosaic and woven motifs.

Typefaces

  • Bold sans-serif in lowercase, geometric or grotesque, for the one-word country name (grèce, greece, griechenland), most often on the EOT posters of 1960-1963, and still on 'athens festival' in 1974

  • Widely spaced roman serif capitals

    GRÈCE, 1960; GREECE, 1961; ATHENS FESTIVAL, 1960 and 1961

  • Heavy grotesque capitals (GREECE over the colour photographs of 1963; ATHENS FESTIVAL, 1964) and condensed grotesque for festival titles and dates (athener festspiele, 1963; ΦΕΣΤΙΒΑΛ ΕΠΙΔΑΥΡΟΥ, 1966)

  • Heavy Clarendon-style slab serif, occasionally

in lowercase on Carabott's 'griechenland' (1961) and in spaced capitals on the 'GRÈCE' mosaic poster (1967)

Known for

  • Michalis Katzourakis, 'greece' mosaic poster for EOT

('Σύνθεση Ψηφιδωτό', 1963 in the GNTO archive and in the designer's own poster gallery; AGI lists its copy as 1960), lithographed by A. Malikoutis and K. Kontogonis: island houses, a chapel, a boat and a bicycle drawn in ink over a field of painted tesserae

  • Katzourakis, Lenormant relief poster, 'grèce' and 'griechenland' editions (EOT, 1962; the German edition photographed by N. Tombazis and printed by Papachrysanthou in 20,000 copies): the relief of a trireme shown three times, as photograph, white silhouette and black silhouette, on ultramarine

  • Katzourakis, sun and seal-stone poster 'grèce' (EOT, 1962; '1960-1962' in the GNTO archive)

a brushed yellow sun above a photographed ancient engraved seal, printed in yellow and black on white, awarded first prize at the International Tourist Poster Exhibition in Livorno in 1962 according to the designer

  • Frederick V. Carabott, 'griechenland' (EOT, 1961; German edition of 20,000)

an island harbour of cut-paper rectangles, sails and a Greek flag mirrored in a flat blue sea

  • Carabott, 'Αρχιτεκτονική Σύνθεση' (Architectural Composition), 'grèce' (EOT, 1963)

black tower houses with coloured windows reflected in a blue band of sea

  • Katzourakis, trireme poster 'grèce' (EOT, 1963; 'Σύνθεση Τριήρης' in the GNTO archive, 'Greek Weaving Art 1963' in the Imagining Greece exhibition): ship and sun drawn as a woven textile in horizontal stripes

  • Michalis Katzourakis and M. Diamantis, 'Μυστράς, Μονή Παντανάσσης', 'greece' (EOT, 1963)

the Byzantine domes of Mystras posterised in black on vermilion

  • Katzourakis, Epidavros Festival posters

1965 (a posterised statue on black steps against blue, in lowercase grotesque) and 1966 (ΦΕΣΤΙΒΑΛ ΕΠΙΔΑΥΡΟΥ above concentric arcs of red, orange, pink and violet, with a small figure at their foot)
