Lo-fi Anime Aesthetic

Also known as Lofi aesthetic, Lo-fi hip hop aesthetic, Lofi Girl style, Lo-fi anime study girl

The look of YouTube's 24/7 lo-fi hip hop streams. Early uploads looped found clips from cartoons and anime (The Simpsons, Whisper of the Heart); the look was fixed when ChilledCow (now Lofi Girl) swapped its Ghibli clip for Juan Pablo Machado's 'Miyazaki-esque' girl studying by a window over Lyon, art many channels copied. One absorbed figure, anime person or animal mascot, in a cosy painted room, a city or rain at dusk outside, cool blue-violet light warmed by a lamp, a few things moving in a seamless loop: a picture to work beside, sincere where vaporwave is ironic.

Use it with care

The study girl (Jade), the Synthwave Boy and Chillhop's raccoon are owned characters, and the genre's first face, a Studio Ghibli clip used without permission, cost ChilledCow its stream in 2017: draw an original figure, room and view instead of tracing Ghibli frames or the Lofi Girl scene. The combination that identifies Lofi Girl (a girl in headphones writing at a desk, a cat on the sill, Lyon's Croix-Rousse hill beyond) is the one to change first: swap at least the figure, the companion and the view. Lofi Girl makes all its art by hand and objects to AI-generated avatars that resemble or recreate its characters, so never generate a look-alike of Jade or her companions, and disclose generated pictures. Leave out Japanese text unless it is correct and means something, and do not dress a room in random kana or generic 'Japan' scenery.

01

How it works

  • Stage one figure, a person drawn in an anime manner or an animal mascot, absorbed in study, work or rest at a desk or a window, turned to the task rather than to the viewer; change who it is, as Chillhop did with its raccoon and Lofi Girl with its Synthwave Boy, rather than repeating the headphoned study girl.
  • Furnish the room with a few props of a quiet life chosen for the person and the place (books and notebooks, a desk lamp, plants, a steaming mug, a pet, a lava lamp or an electric fan), so it reads lived-in and safe, full but never crowded.
  • Open a window onto a view that belongs to the place, a city, a river, rain or sky at dusk or night (fan versions moved it to Seville's Guadalquivir), and paint that background with more detail and atmosphere than the cel-shaded figure, in the manner of Ghibli backgrounds.
  • Key the scene to a cool range of blue, violet and dusty pink, and set warm lamplight against it as the one soft contrast, with gradients, soft edges and at most a light grain instead of crisp vector finish.
  • Animate only a few things in a seamless loop (a pen, rain, steam, a tail, a sky that follows the time of day) so the picture can run for hours without asking for attention.
  • Keep type quiet and apart from the picture, a lowercase title with one emoji at most, and treat the scene sincerely, with no irony and no collage of found images.

YouTube's 24/7 lo-fi hip hop streams of the mid-2010s, above all ChilledCow, the French channel started in 2015 by a business-school student who keeps his anonymity and renamed Lofi Girl in March 2021. Its 'lofi hip hop radio' stream began on 25 February 2017 over a looped clip of Shizuku from Studio Ghibli's Whisper of the Heart (1995). After YouTube took that down in 2017, the channel put out a call to French illustration and animation schools and chose a 'Miyazaki-esque' studying girl by Juan Pablo Machado, a Colombian-French student at the École Émile-Cohl in Lyon, in use by 2018. Chillhop Music in Rotterdam and College Music in the UK spread the scene. The DJ Ryan Celsius traces its audience to the anime and mellow bumpers of Adult Swim and Toonami in the 2000s; the beats descend from J Dilla and from Nujabes, who co-scored Samurai Champloo (2004) with Tsutchie, Fat Jon and Force of Nature

Typefaces

  • Lowercase stream and track titles in plain sans text with a single emoji as the only ornament, as in Lofi Girl's 'lofi hip hop radio 📚 beats to relax/study to' and 'jazz lofi radio 🎷 beats to chill/study to'

  • Letter-spaced capitals in track and compilation titles ('RAINING IN P A R I S', 'L O V E S I C K'), which fans trace to vaporwave and to typing Latin words with Japanese keyboards and typefaces (Wang, 2020)

Known for

  • ChilledCow (Lofi Girl from March 2021)

'lofi hip hop radio - beats to relax/study to', the 24/7 stream begun on 25 February 2017 over a looped clip of Shizuku Tsukishima from Studio Ghibli's Whisper of the Heart (Yoshifumi Kondō, 1995), until YouTube took it down for the unlicensed footage in 2017: the genre's found-clip practice, and the precursor of its original-art look

  • Juan Pablo Machado, the looping studying girl for ChilledCow

officially named Jade, made as a student at the École Émile-Cohl in Lyon to a brief for 'Miyazaki-esque' visuals and in use by mid-2018: headphones and a cat on the windowsill, at first against a plain black window, later with the Croix-Rousse hill of Lyon outside and a sky that follows the time of day

  • College Music with the Samaritans, a reworked 'Study Girl' animation on its lo-fi livestream that broke the endless loop to point students to mental-health support (April 2019)

  • Chillhop Music (Rotterdam), the raccoon mascot that first appeared on its seasonal Chillhop Essentials covers in 2018, drawn by Mauro Martins, and its 24/7 bedroom livestream from 2018, with livestream and Essentials art by Jeoffrey Magellan and the 2019 Essentials covers by Tristan Gion

  • Fan versions of the study girl that moved her room to other countries, such as a Spanish one with the Guadalquivir in Seville beyond the window (2020) and Filipino ones with an electric fan, a monobloc chair and a jalousie window (2020–21)

  • Lofi Girl, 'synthwave radio 🌌 - beats to chill/game to' (11 April 2023)

the 'Synthwave Boy' types at a mechanical keyboard beside his dog, a lava lamp and a Saturn-shaped neon sign, in the faint blue window seen from the study girl's room

  • STEEZYASFUCK (youtube.com/user/562Steezy)

an independent instrumental hip-hop channel from Los Angeles active since 2014, which ran its own 24/7 'lofi hip hop radio - relaxing beats to study/chill/sleep to ☕️' by May 2018 and which VICE (July 2018) linked to the loop of an anime girl reading a newspaper with a hot cup of coffee
