Showa and Heisei Retro Revival (Japanese Packaging and Kissaten Graphics)
Also known as Shōwa retro, Heisei retro, 昭和レトロ, 平成レトロ
A contemporary Japanese revival of mid-to-late twentieth-century everyday graphics: kissaten cafe menus and tableware, dagashi sweet packaging, reissued products and calendars. It reuses hand-lettered katakana, rounded display type, floral patterns and flat spot-colour figures, worn with faded ink, halftone and misregistration, to evoke warm, remembered ordinary life. Unlike newtro (Korean heritage-brand reissues), it is led by Japanese katakana lettering, kissaten props and a pale pastel spot-colour palette.

01
How it works
- Letter headlines and product names by hand or in a rounded gothic, with katakana made chunky and slightly uneven.
- Limit the palette to a few flat, slightly faded inks: cream-soda green, strawberry red, custard yellow on warm paper white.
- Decorate tableware, wrappers and menus with small repeated floral patterns and simple badges.
- Add a friendly illustrated figure or painted food illustration as the single point of entry.
- Imitate period print wear, with visible halftone dots, slight misregistration and film-like fade, rather than clean digital finish.
- Stage the design on real objects, such as glass dishes, paper bags, signs and cameras, so it reads as a reissued artefact.
Japan. Nostalgia for the Shōwa era (1926 to 1989) is dated to waves from 1974, with later waves in 1986, 2005, 2012 and 2017; the 2017 wave centres on the 1980s, and Heisei retro (mainly the late 1990s) runs alongside it.
