Giallo Mondadori Covers (I Libri Gialli)
Also known as I Libri Gialli, I Gialli Mondadori, Il Giallo Mondadori, Gialli Mondadori
The cover system of Mondadori's crime series, Milan, from I Libri Gialli of 1929 to Il Giallo Mondadori today. Every cover is the same bright yellow, which gave Italian its word giallo for crime fiction, with one red-rimmed window on a painted moment of the crime: a hexagon on the first four books, then a circle the figures often step out of. Heavy sans capitals stack the title above and the author below; later the masthead moved to a corner block (late 1950s), then to a band over a red stripe (late 1960s). Carlo Jacono, 'the man of the circle', painted the scenes in tempera, 1950-86.

Use it with care
Il Giallo Mondadori, its masthead and the Mondadori emblem belong to Arnoldo Mondadori Editore, which still publishes the series, and the cover paintings by Carlo Jacono and others remain in copyright: paint your own scene and letter your own title, do not combine a yellow ground, a red-rimmed circle and a Mondadori-style masthead so that a design passes for an issue of the series, and never present a generated cover as a vintage giallo. Do not default to the pin-up and sexualised-victim clichés some covers use (the woman in lingerie on no. 385, 1956) when borrowing the look.
01
How it works
- Brand the series with one colour: print every cover on the same flat, bright yellow and change only the picture, the title and the issue number, so that a rack of titles reads as one series and the colour itself comes to name the genre.
- Open a single window in the yellow, large and usually near the centre of the cover (pushed to one side behind the figures in the 1950s), rimmed in red (from the late 1960s red with a thin white inner line), and paint one tense moment of the story inside it: a hexagon on the first four books of 1929, then a circle kept for decades.
- Let the figures break the frame: push a head, a shoulder, a face or a pistol over the rim onto the bare yellow, so the scene comes forward out of its window instead of sitting behind it. This is strongest from 1929 to the mid-1960s; on the later band-and-stripe covers the scene mostly stays inside the circle.
- Paint the scene as veristically as you can, in opaque tempera or gouache with visible brushwork and dramatic, cinematic lighting, as Carlo Jacono did for the series from 1950 to 1986 (nearly 3,000 covers across Mondadori's crime, spy and science-fiction series by his own count after 29 years); keep it figurative, with a detective, a victim or a woman with a gun, never abstract.
- Set the type in a fixed series template that changes by era: on the early and 1950s covers stack heavy black sans capitals on the central axis, the title above the window and the author below, with a hand-lettered selling line (in script in 1929), a masthead over a rule in the 1950s and the price in a red roundel; from the late 1950s pin a red logo block with the masthead in white to the top-left corner, set the author beside it and the condensed title across the width, with the price in a red box at the bottom right beside a blue band along the foot; from the late 1960s run the masthead in bold condensed capitals on a yellow band over a red stripe and set the title in a light sans, often flush left.
Milan: Arnoldo Mondadori launched I Libri Gialli in September 1929 with four translated crime novels at 5.50 lire, prepared with his secretary Luigi Rusca and his press chief Enrico Piceni (who later claimed to have proposed the name 'giallo') and edited by Lorenzo Montano. The series became fortnightly in the 1930s, was halted under pressure from the Ministry of Popular Culture in October 1941 (no. 266) and returned in 1946 under Alberto Tedeschi, its imprint reading I Libri Gialli, nuova serie, in 1946-47 and I Gialli Mondadori by 1953. A weekly by the 1950s, it was renamed Il Giallo Mondadori by about 1958 (the imprint from 1958, the masthead of no. 600, July 1960); it.wikipedia's April 1946 date for that name is contradicted by the I GIALLI MONDADORI masthead of 1956. Tedeschi gave the covers to Carlo Jacono, who as a boy had been inspired by American illustrators and painted them from 1950 to 1986; Kurt Caesar and Mario D'Antona also painted covers for the series. It continues, in pocket-book format since 1996.

Heavy hand-drawn sans-serif capitals for title and author on the 1929-31 card covers, black or blue-black on yellow and split above and below the window (LA STRANA MORTE DEL / SIGNOR BENSON, 1929; L'AFFARE D'ARBLAY / R. AUSTIN FREEMAN, 1931)
Informal hand lettering for selling lines and prices

Condensed display capitals for title and author on the postwar weekly, under a masthead of spaced sans capitals over a rule
(I GIALLI MONDADORI / IL DELITTO MI HA VINTO / di FRANCO ENNA, no. 385, 1956), then heavy condensed title capitals across the full width beside a red corner block lettered IL GIALLO MONDADORI in white sans capitals (COLPO A FREDDO, no. 600, 1960)
Bold condensed sans capitals for the IL GIALLO MONDADORI masthead on a yellow band over a red stripe
with the title in a light sans set in capitals, often flush left, and the author in small upper and lower case (no. 954, 1967); the same band over red and white stripes, with author and title centred in a light sans, on nos. 2246 (1992) and 2337 (1993)
Known for
I Libri Gialli, the first four volumes
(Milan, September 1929, 5.50 lire, card covers in large sixteenmo), among them S. S. Van Dine's La strana morte del signor Benson: the title in black capitals split above and below a red hexagon holding the crime scene, with the red script slogan 'Ogni pagina un'emozione!'
R. Austin Freeman, L'affare D'Arblay, I Libri Gialli no. 23 (1931)
the scene in a red-rimmed circle with the detective's head rising over its rim, 'Un libro che non vi lascerà dormire!' in upright informal lettering across the top, a red 5 LIRE roundel and the A·M monogram
Franco Enna, Il delitto mi ha vinto, I Gialli Mondadori no. 385 (weekly, 2 June 1956)
masthead over a rule, condensed title capitals, a woman in lingerie and a pistol painted out of a loosely brushed red disc set to the left, a red 130-lire roundel and a ruled box with the issue details at the left, and 'di FRANCO ENNA' along the foot
Carlo Jacono's tempera covers for the series (1950-1986), part of the nearly 3,000 covers he counted after 29 years for Mondadori's I Gialli, Segretissimo and, at times, the Classici del Giallo and Urania, which earned him the nickname 'uomo del cerchio' (the man of the circle)
James Hadley Chase, Colpo a freddo, Il Giallo Mondadori no. 600 (31 July 1960, L. 150), cover by Carlo Jacono
a red logo block top left with IL GIALLO MONDADORI in white, the author top right, heavy condensed title capitals across the width, the detective's head breaking a red-rimmed circle, a red price box bottom right and a blue IN APPENDICE band along the foot
Brett Halliday, Il mondo violento di Michael Shayne, Il Giallo Mondadori no. 954 (14 May 1967, L. 250), cover by Carlo Jacono
the masthead in bold condensed black capitals on a yellow band over a red stripe, the title flush left in a light sans, the author in small upper and lower case, and the scene inside a large red-and-white-rimmed circle
Il Giallo Mondadori no. 2246
(weekly, 16 February 1992, 5,000 lire) and no. 2337 (1993), continuing the band-and-stripe template of the late 1960s: the masthead in bold black capitals on a yellow band over red and white stripes, author and title centred in a light sans, the picture in a red-and-white-rimmed circle; by 2004 the sister series I Classici del Giallo Mondadori could put a photograph in the circle (Lilian Jackson Braun, Il gatto che andava al cinema, two Siamese cats)
