Dark Academia

Also known as Dark academia aesthetic, Tumblr dark academia, Gothic university aesthetic

A moodboard aesthetic of candlelit libraries, Gothic and Collegiate Gothic colleges, dark wooden furniture and autumn imagery, in black, white, beige, browns, dark green and occasionally navy. Classical serif quotations and book imagery carry its nostalgic, brooding romance of scholarship. Critics note a perceived Eurocentrism and lack of diversity, an elitism that excludes outsiders, and a glamourising of sleep deprivation, overwork and substance misuse; the aesthetic romanticises all of these.

01

How it works

  • Ground every composition in a dark palette of black, beige, brown and deep green, with white and occasional navy.
  • Pick photographs of libraries, Gothic colleges, candlelight and autumn, and dim them with grain and warm toning.
  • Set quotations and titles in classical serif type.
  • Assemble cropped images, quotes and ephemera as a dense, cluttered pinboard collage.
  • Frame the scene as nostalgic and brooding: scholarship as secret romance.
  • Treat the genre's Eurocentric, elitist canon and its glamour of overwork and substance misuse as habits to question, not to copy.

Tumblr, about 2014 to 2015, among fans of Donna Tartt's The Secret History (1992); it spread on Instagram and Pinterest from about 2017 and on TikTok during the COVID-19 pandemic
