Amazonian Boat Lettering (Abridores de Letras)
Also known as Letras de barco, Abridores de letras, Letra decorativa amazônica, Letras que flutuam (floating letters)
The painted boat names of Pará's rivers in the Brazilian Amazon, made for about a century by self-taught riverside painters (abridores de letras). Capitals with Tuscan-type serifs and flourishes from nineteenth-century display types are split at mid-height into two contrasting colours, modelled with a blend (matizado) and finished with a second layer of shadows, extrusions and hatching (caqueado), in up to ten colours. Each painter's hand shows within a shared code; young painters on Marajó increasingly use quicker spray guns (grafite), and Pará declared the craft intangible heritage in 2026.
Use it with care
Boat lettering is the living trade and income of named, mostly self-taught riverside painters, many of whom now work with the Instituto Letras que Flutuam, which advises them on copyright: commission and credit abridores rather than tracing a particular boat or turning a painter's hand into a font without consent and payment. Boats carry their owners' and family names, slogans and sayings that are often religious, so do not reuse them as decorative filler, and never present a generated image as a real Amazonian boat.

How it works
- Paint the boat's name in capitals with Tuscan-type serifs and flourishes, large enough to read from the quay and across the river.
- Split every letter at mid-height into two contrasting colours, and repeat the same split letter by letter along the name.
- Model the letters with a graded blend (matizado), then add a second, also two-part layer (caqueado) of shadows, extrusions, colour transitions and fine hatch marks so they stand out in relief.
- Measure the hull first and mark guides and colour zones before painting, fitting the name to the planking.
- Let the lettering be the only picture on the outside of the hull, and spend up to about ten saturated paint colours on it.
- Develop a recognisable personal hand within the shared riverside code, and outdo the neighbouring boats rather than copy them.
Riverside towns of Pará, Brazil, on the Amazon and Tocantins basins and the Marajó Bay (Belém, Abaetetuba, Curralinho, Soure, Muaná, and riverside communities such as Boa Vista do Acará). Its start is usually placed around 1925, when, on one hypothesis (Martins in Pesquisa FAPESP; O Liberal credits the Capitania dos Portos), a federal rule made a name on the hull compulsory; the first names were simple, and the bicolour, shaded letters grew more elaborate over the following decades, with many of today's painters learning between the 1940s and 1970s; self-taught painters called abridores, after the old word for a punchcutter, letter boats, walls and facades.
