Islamic Geometric × Iranian Modernist Graphic Design
Set one calligraphic word or a fragment of girih against flat colour and a modernist grid instead of reproducing whole tile panels.
Use girih geometry as the hidden construction grid for stretched and interlocked calligraphic letters.

Text · Islamic Geometric
A visual system shared across the Islamic world in which proportioned calligraphy, compass-and-straightedge geometry and the vegetal arabesque carry meaning and beauty in place of figurative imagery. Star-and-polygon tilings repeat across whole surfaces as if continuing beyond the frame, while Kufic, Thuluth and Naskh inscriptions give hierarchy to buildings, manuscripts and objects.

The colours
The ground and leading colours come from Iranian Modernist Graphic Design, with a counter-accent from Islamic Geometric. The ink reads on the ground at 4.5:1 or more.

Use it with care
Islamic Geometric & Calligraphic Tradition: Qur'anic verses, the names of God and the Prophet and other sacred phrases must not be cropped, distorted, mirrored, used as texture or printed on floors, footwear or throwaway packaging; have any Arabic-script text read and approved by a fluent reader or calligrapher. Abstract geometric pattern is far less sensitive than script, but credit the traditions and makers it comes from.

With Islamic Geometric
- International Typographic Style Contrasts · Drop one tessellated panel into an asymmetric Swiss grid to make the tension between infinite pattern and white space the subject.
- Art Deco Pairs well · Borrow star polygons and stepped borders for Deco-style framing; both depend on strict symmetry and metallic accents.
- Armenian Manuscript Illumination Contrasts · Horseshoe arches and vegetal and geometric ornament are shared, but the Islamic geometric tradition keeps its arches and fields aniconic, while Armenian books fill the same arches with birds, beasts and painted saints; choose whether a frame should carry figures or only pattern.
- Kamon (Japanese Family Crests) Contrasts · Both are built with compass and straight edge, but girih tiles the whole surface without end while a mon closes one motif inside a ring; borrow the tessellation for a ground and the crest for the single sign on it.
- Baghdad School of Arab Book Painting (Maqamat Illustration) Contrasts · Non-figural Islamic art is the contrast: this style puts people and satire where geometry would be. No descent is implied.
- Ethiopian Ge'ez Manuscript & Haräg Illumination Pairs well · Haräg interlace and Islamic strapwork share frame-and-band logic; compare them for headpieces, but keep the Ethiopian bands varied rather than strictly tiled.
- Andean Woven Graphic Systems Contrasts · Islamic pattern interlaces stars around radial centres while Andean geometry is orthogonal, stepped and deliberately irregular; choose one as the structural logic rather than blending them.
- Batik Pattern Tradition Pairs well · Coastal batik already absorbs Arabic script and geometric lattices; combine the two for pattern that is both structured and hand-made.
With Iranian Modernist Graphic Design
- Polish Poster School Pairs well · Combine the Polish school's painted metaphor with Persian lettering for a conceptual cultural poster.
- International Typographic Style Contrasts · Iranian designers deliberately sidestepped the Swiss grid; set neutral Latin type against expressive Persian letters to dramatise system versus script.
- Cairo–Beirut Arab Modernist Book & Periodical Design Pairs well · Tehran's Kanoon and Beirut's Dar al-Fata al-Arabi were parallel 1970s children's-publishing cultures; combine Persian calligraphic covers with Arab picture-book drawing for a regional series.
- Square Kufic (Bannāʾī) Pairs well · Persian Wikipedia records bannāʾī in modern posters, logos and letterheads, and the atlas's Iranian modernist entry counts it among its Persian scripts; pair a square-Kufic title block with a Nastaʿlīq line and one flat figure for a Persian cultural poster.
- Persian Popular Narrative (Lithographs & Coffeehouse Painting) Pairs well · Farshid Mesghali collaged coloured clippings of Qajar lithograph illustrations for a poster for the Tehran International Festival of Films for Children and Young Adults (dated November 1967 by Marzolph); crop and enlarge a hatched lithograph figure inside a modernist, white-ground layout.
- Greek Tourism Modernism (EOT) Contrasts · Both are 1960s national modernisms that turned heritage into modern posters: Tehran built it from calligraphic letterforms, EOT from photographed antiquities under a single word of sans; compare them to choose between letter-led and object-led heritage modernism.
- Turkish Modernist Poster & Graphic Design Contrasts · Its Iranian contemporary also learned from the Polish poster, but built its posters on Persian calligraphy and miniature; after the 1928 alphabet reform Turkish designers worked in Latin letters and quoted Kufic only as a reduced sign. Choose Tehran when the letterform should be the protagonist, Istanbul when a drawn figure should be.
- Persian Miniature (Ilkhanid, Timurid and Safavid Book Painting) Pairs well · Iranian modernists drew on miniature imagery; take one stylised figure, a cloud band or a gold rule from the miniature and set it in the open, single-focus space of a modern poster rather than copying a whole crowded page.
