Text · Jeepney Art
The decoration of the Philippine jeepney, the shared taxi built from surplus US Army jeeps after 1945 and later from locally fabricated stainless-steel bodies by firms such as Sarao and Francisco Motors. Owners turn each vehicle into a rolling signboard of airbrushed murals, chrome horses and trim, pinstripes, saints, cartoon heroes, family names and route lettering, competing for passengers in Manila traffic.
Oswald; Jeepney Art used Shaded and outlined sign-painter capitals and Flowing brush scripts for names

The colours

With Googie
- Y2K Futurism Pairs well · Both sell a glossy future; add Googie starbursts and orbit lines to Y2K chrome for retro-futurism that spans both millennia.
- HfG Ulm Systematic Design Contrasts · Ulm's anti-styling functionalism is its sober opposite; use the contrast to calibrate how much showmanship a brand can bear.
- Hand-Painted Signage & Vernacular Lettering Pairs well · Pair Googie forms with sign-painter scripts and shaded lettering for convincing diner, motel and bowling-alley signage.
- Memphis Design Pairs well · Memphis revived its boomerangs and squiggles; mix the two for a playful atomic-meets-postmodern pattern system.
- City Pop Illustration Pairs well · Googie's motels, diners and boomerang roadside signs are the American architecture these painters idealised; borrow its signage and script for the fascias in a city pop street scene.
- Polish Cold War Neon (PRL Neonisation) Contrasts · Googie sold motels and coffee shops to passing drivers with starbursts, boomerangs and swept-back sign panels; the Polish signs answered to state planners rather than to passing trade and kept to a script name and a line figure on a modernist block. Borrow googie's bounce when a Polish-style sign feels too polite.
- Art Deco Pairs well · Googie's atomic starbursts extend Deco's celestial ornament; mix them for retro hospitality and signage.
- Streamline Moderne Pairs well · Googie is Streamline's post-war heir; combine their curves and speed lines for retro diner, travel or automotive branding.
With Jeepney Art
- Total Design & Dutch Functionalism Contrasts · Systematic transit signage is the rational opposite of owner-by-owner jeepney lettering; contrast the two when designing public-transport identities.
- Pop Art Graphics Pairs well · Jeepneys already mix comic heroes with devotional images; Pop's flat Ben-Day treatment can systematise that mash-up for print.
- Baybayin Revival Graphics Contrasts · Both speak for Filipino identity, but jeepney art crowds chrome, airbrush and polychrome lettering, while baybayin revival sets a single one-ink character in open space; use the contrast to decide between festive abundance and a quiet mark of origin.
- Filipino Komiks Pairs well · Both are Manila's popular street graphics from the same postwar decades. Put a komiks hero, drawn in black brush line, on a jeepney's polychrome panel, chrome trim and shaded sign-painter lettering for a piece that reads as Manila.
- Itasha (Anime Character Car Graphics) Contrasts · Both cover a vehicle in saturated colour, figures and emblems, but a jeepney is a passenger vehicle painted by hired sign painters with chrome, scripts and folk symbols, while an itasha is a private car wearing one fan's printed characters; borrow the jeepney's chrome and lettering only to show what itasha leaves out.
- Dhaka Rickshaw Painting Pairs well · Another street-vehicle painting tradition; rickshaw art is picture-panel and portrait-led rather than metal-trimmed and lettering-heavy.
- Matatu & Nganya Art Contrasts · The nearest vehicle tradition: both are privately owned shared taxis decorated to win passengers, but the jeepney leans on chrome horses, pinstripes, saints and family names, while the nganya is a canvas for near-photographic portraits of global pop, sports and political stars, hip-hop catchphrases, screens and LEDs.
