Hanken Grotesk, standing in for Circular (Laurenz Brunner, Lineto, 2013)
Text · Muji No-Brand Design
A house style that sells goods by withholding branding: clear cellophane and plain brown paper, plain labels stating the item and its price, and products centred in wide margins. Begun in Tokyo in 1980 under Ikko Tanaka, it makes calm a design method rather than a mood; Kenya Hara, art director since 2001, later articulated this through his idea of emptiness in his writing.
Zen Kaku Gothic New; Muji No-Brand Design used Japanese gothic (kaku gothic) sans-serif, the plain Japanese text tradition for labels and signage and Neutral neo-grotesque Latin sans-serif for English-language labels and signage, in the Helvetica tradition

With DTC 'Blanding'
- Scandinavian Functionalism Pairs well · Shares a warm, domestic restraint; borrow Nordic materials and craft photography to give a pastel system more texture and credibility.
- Neo-Brutalism Contrasts · The post-blanding swing: thick outlines, clashing brights and hard shadows are the quickest way out of pastel sameness.
- Neoclassical Book Typography Contrasts · Luxury's other reduction: a single Didone wordmark signals heritage where the lowercase sans signals approachability.
- Corporate Memphis Pairs well · Its illustration-led sibling; add a few flat vector figures when seamless-backdrop photography alone feels too cold.
- Minimalist Graphic Design Contrasts · Its austere parent: swap pastel and chatty copy back to monochrome and silence when a brand needs authority rather than friendliness.
- Natural Wine Label Art Contrasts · Blanding sells a frictionless, agency-made brand in lowercase geometric sans and pastels; the natural wine label sells a person through an untrained drawing. Use the contrast to decide whether a product should feel designed or made.
- Hipster Artisanal Revival Contrasts · Where this dressed new firms as old ones, blanding dressed them as frictionless and new, with lowercase geometric sans, pastels and white space; set the two side by side to place a brand between heritage and novelty.
- Guochao (China-Chic National Trend) Contrasts · Western direct-to-consumer brands strip identity to pastel sans-serif minimalism; guochao sells ornament and heritage instead, so use one to test the other.
With Muji No-Brand Design
- International Typographic Style Contrasts · Where the Swiss style builds hierarchy on a grid and scale, this one flattens it and lets the object sit alone.
- Ma & Wabi-sabi Aesthetics Pairs well · Add ma, the charged interval, so the empty space reads as intention instead of a missing design.
- Japanese Postwar Modernism Pairs well · Take its single focal point and flat colour, then remove the emblem and the poster drama for a quieter consumer object.
- Plain Tobacco Packaging Contrasts · Both strip branding, but one is a regulatory sanction in drab brown and the other a voluntary, serene choice.
- minä perhonen (Hand-Drawn Textile Graphics, Akira Minagawa) Pairs well · Plain everyday goods give the quiet ground that lets small hand-drawn pattern read.
