Style combinations

Which styles go together, and why. For each style, Stylogeny’s research records the styles it pairs well with and the ones it plays against. Each combination here takes the two apart into type, colour, form, composition and surface, and puts them back together, every part from the style with the stronger say in it.

Contrasts

Hand-Painted Signage × Roman-like Thai Typography

AaAaInter Tight + Oswald
Form
Borders & frames, restrained accents
Composition
Central symmetry, framed panels
Surface
Hard offset shadow, painterly brushwork

A hand-painted shopfront sign, in looped letters or broad-nib Naris, beside a flat loopless headline shows the shift from the letterer's hand to dry transfer and digital type that Manop Srisomporn himself made.

Contrasts

ACT UP × Latin American Feminist Protest Graphics

AaAaAnton + Oswald
Form
Emblems & badges, pictogram
Composition
Layered information, isolated object
Surface
Photocopy & distress, flat

Two movements signed with a triangle, ACT UP's pink one on black and the green kerchief, but Gran Fury bought ad space and printed offset photographs and Futura, while the green wave wears its sign and letters its placards by hand; polish against handmade multitude.

Contrasts

Minimalist Graphic Design × Neo-Andean Architecture

AaAaInter Tight + Jost
Form
Angular & zigzag, abundant decoration
Composition
Isolated object, generous white space
Surface
Gloss & highlights, flat

Its exact opposite on ornament and colour; one symmetrical fluorescent panel in a white, empty layout reads as a loud statement of identity.

Contrasts

Polish Information Picture Book × Leningrad Avant-Garde Picture Book

AaAaLondrina Solid + Inter
Form
Stylised figuration, pictogram
Composition
All-over field, horror vacui
Surface
Grain & noise

Both explain the world to children in flat colour, but Lebedev's production books float a few large planes on bare paper while a Mizieliński atlas crowds the page with small figures and labels; decide between one clear object per page and a field to explore.

Pairs well

Demoscene Graphics × Kinetic Typography

AaAaInter Tight + VT323
Form
Rules & bars, optical pattern
Composition
Sequential narrative, full bleed
Surface
Chrome & 3D render, grain & noise

The sine scroller is an early kinetic type system; set greetings or credits as a waving bitmap scroller over raster bars for event openers and title sequences.

Pairs well

Bengali Modernist Book Cover × Santiniketan

AaAaRozha One + EB Garamond
Form
Stylised figuration, biomorphic curves
Composition
Isolated object, single focal point
Surface
Painterly brushwork, paper & letterpress bite

Satyajit Ray studied at Kala Bhavana from 1940 to 1942 before designing Signet Press covers; pair Santiniketan's brush line and earth colours with the prachchhad's hand-drawn Bengali titles.

Contrasts

Flash Vector Cartoon × Zagreb School of Animated Film

AaAaPixelify Sans + Jost
Form
Stylised figuration, rounded & pill
Composition
Sequential narrative, isolated object
Surface
Painterly brushwork, grain & noise

Textured, earthy, modernist art-house shorts against the even strokes, gradients and portal irreverence of Flash.

Pairs well

Kalighat Pat × Santiniketan

AaAaRozha One + Archivo
Form
Stylised figuration, distortion & exaggeration
Composition
Isolated object, single focal point
Surface
Painterly brushwork, carved line

Santiniketan took its quick, loaded brush contour from Bengal's pata painters; combine the two for single figures on bare paper, with Kalighat's satire or Haripura's dignity.

Contrasts

Finnish Bold Print × African Wax

AaAaAgbalumo + Inter
Form
Biomorphic curves, non-representational
Composition
All-over field, repetition & rhythm
Surface
Misregistration & overprint, flat

Both are industrially printed cotton that dresses bodies and rooms, but wax print crowds the cloth with misregistered emblems that traders and wearers name after proverbs and events, while Marimekko enlarges one shape on open white under a title its designer gives; compare them when a pattern must speak or simply be bold.

Pairs well

Generative-AI Image Aesthetic × Vaporwave

AaAaSyncopate + Space Grotesk
Form
Naturalistic depiction, distortion & exaggeration
Composition
Single focal point, illusion of depth
Surface
Gloss & highlights, chrome & 3d render

Vaporwave's ironic distance is the antidote to AI's earnest polish; frame generated images as found kitsch to make the artificiality the point.

Contrasts

Flat Design × Indie Pixel Art Revival

AaAaPixelify Sans + Inter
Form
Stylised figuration, rectilinear
Composition
Full bleed, illusion of depth
Surface
Flat

Resolution-independent vector flatness against a deliberately coarse grid lit with glows and depth.

Contrasts

Australian Travel Poster × WPA Silkscreen Posters

AaAaPoiret One + Jost
Form
Naturalistic depiction, stylised figuration
Composition
Single focal point, isolated object
Surface
Painterly brushwork

The Federal Art Project also made travel and national-park posters in the 1930s, but in flat, layered screenprint for public programmes; set them side by side to choose between commercial painted lithography and a few opaque public-service inks.

Pairs well

Kanoon Children's Book Illustration × Persian Miniature

AaAaLondrina Solid + EB Garamond
Form
Stylised figuration, folk & sacred symbols
Composition
Framed panels, horror vacui
Surface
Flat

A possible visual kinship in framed compartments and ornament; not established by the cited sources.

Pairs well

Celtic Revival Illumination × Mir iskusstva Book Art

AaAaFederant + EB Garamond
Form
Geometric tessellation, abundant decoration
Composition
Framed panels, central symmetry
Surface
Flat

A parallel national revival of the same decades: both turned medieval and folk ornament into the borders and initials of a modern book; combine for a heritage storybook framed in old ornament.

Contrasts

Fluxus Graphics × Punk

AaAaAnton + Courier Prime
Form
Rectilinear, rules & bars
Composition
Collage & layering, dynamic asymmetry
Surface
Photocopy & distress, halftone & ben-day dots

Both mix found type with appropriated pictures, but punk tears and photocopies while Fluxus keeps a clean offset black, justified blocks and a tight edge-to-edge grid; use the Fluxus version when cheap materials should still look ordered.

Contrasts

ACT UP × Instagram Slideshow Activism

AaAaAnton + Inter
Form
Naturalistic depiction, geometric primitives
Composition
Sequential narrative, full bleed
Surface
Photocopy & distress, flat

Its confrontational opposite: black grounds, hot pink and one blunt slogan, where the typical slideshow shuns 'blood red or black messaging' (Ría Thompson-Washington) and softens the message to stay comfortable.

Contrasts

Black Metal Graphics × Gabber and Hardcore Graphics

AaAaAnton + Special Elite
Form
Emblems & badges, angular & zigzag
Composition
Central symmetry, single focal point
Surface
Grain & noise, photocopy & distress

Both use menace and emblems, but one is neon and rendered, the other monochrome and hand-inked.

Pairs well

Polish Cold War Neon × Polish Poster School

AaAaYellowtail + Archivo
Form
Distortion & exaggeration, stylised figuration
Composition
Isolated object, single focal point
Surface
Painterly brushwork

Some of the same artists drew posters and neons; take the poster's single witty idea and hand-drawn title and translate it into one line of light for a night version of a campaign.

Pairs well

Memphis Design × Swiss Punk

AaAaInter Tight + Jost
Form
Geometric primitives, squiggles & confetti
Composition
Broken grid, dynamic asymmetry
Surface
Halftone & Ben-Day dots

Add Memphis squiggles and pastel triangles to New Wave's floating bars for the full 1980s postmodern palette.

Contrasts

ECM Sleeve Aesthetic × Slow-Living Editorial

AaAaEB Garamond + Inter
Form
Naturalistic depiction, ornament-free
Composition
Generous white space, single focal point
Surface
Grain & noise

The nearest genome: one photograph, small type and silence, but ECM's picture is a wintry, often black-and-white landscape without people, while Kinfolk's is a warm, peopled interior or laid table; pick ECM for solitude and this for company.

Contrasts

Pop Art Graphics × International Typographic Style

AaAaInter Tight + Archivo
Form
Stylised figuration, emblems & badges
Composition
Modular grid, dynamic asymmetry
Surface
Halftone & Ben-Day dots, hard offset shadow

Set one loud appropriated Pop image inside a strict grid with a neutral grotesque so the irony reads as deliberate rather than chaotic.

Contrasts

Imagerie d'Épinal × Lubok Popular Print

AaAaLondrina Solid + Bodoni Moda
Form
Stylised figuration, distortion & exaggeration
Composition
Repetition & rhythm, framed panels
Surface
Misregistration & overprint, carved line

Both are pedlars' broadsheets coloured by hand, but the lubok crams verse into the gaps around its figures and brushes washes on freely, while the Épinal sheet keeps its text beneath a ruled frame and stencils colour across rows of repeated figures; choose the lubok for jostling satire and Épinal for an orderly catalogue or story.

Contrasts

Lianhuanhua Picture-Story Books × Ligne Claire

AaAaLondrina Solid + Shippori Mincho
Form
Stylised figuration, naturalistic depiction
Composition
Framed panels, sequential narrative
Surface
Flat

Both tell stories in outlined drawings; lianhuanhua gives each pocket-sized page one framed black-ink picture with a caption and keeps colour for the cover, ligne claire fills tiered multi-panel pages with balloons and flat, bright colour, caricatural figures in realistic settings.

Pairs well

Blue Note Jazz Sleeve Modernism × Drum Magazine

AaAaArchivo + Archivo
Form
Naturalistic depiction, rules & bars
Composition
Dynamic asymmetry, extreme scale contrast
Surface
Grain & noise, halftone & ben-day dots

Two 1950s ways of picturing jazz musicians in black-and-white photographs with condensed capitals; take Blue Note's single giant word and one tint for a calmer, more modernist Drum page.

Pairs well

Kamon × Rinpa

AaAaShippori Mincho + Shippori Mincho
Form
Pictogram, emblems & badges
Composition
Radial & concentric, central symmetry
Surface
Painterly brushwork, flat

Kōrin patterns reduce a plum or a wave to an emblem much as a mon does; pair a crest-like Rinpa motif with a large open ground for packaging, keeping it free of any real family's crest.

Pairs well

Emoji Pictographic Language × VTuber Avatar and Stream Graphics

AaAaMochiy Pop One + Shippori Mincho
Form
Pictogram, stylised figuration
Composition
Layered information, collage & layering
Surface
Gloss & highlights, flat

Reduce the character and its motifs to small square pictographs for channel emotes and membership badges, so the community can type the persona into chat.

Contrasts

Art Nouveau × Vienna Secession

AaAaFederant + Bodoni Moda
Form
Whiplash line, biomorphic curves
Composition
Central symmetry, framed panels
Surface
Flat

Set French whiplash against the Viennese square to show the turn from organic to geometric ornament within one decorative idiom.

Pairs well

Edo-moji Commercial Lettering × Kamon

AaAaYatra One + Shippori Mincho
Form
Pictogram, emblems & badges
Composition
Radial & concentric, central symmetry
Surface
Painterly brushwork

Pair a one-colour mon with a packed column of kago-moji or yose-moji for a curtain, label or name card that carries both the house sign and the house name; both reduce to one ink and survive dyeing, painting and printing.

Pairs well

Minimalist Graphic Design × Neoclassical Book Typography

AaAaBodoni Moda + Inter
Form
Geometric primitives, non-representational
Composition
Isolated object, generous white space
Surface
Paper & letterpress bite

Set a single Didone headline in minimalism's empty, monochrome field for the classic luxury-fashion register.

Pairs well

Graffiti × Hype Streetwear Graphics

AaAaSedgwick Ave Display + Jost
Form
Emblems & badges, rectilinear
Composition
Isolated object, single focal point
Surface
Hard offset shadow, painterly brushwork

Streetwear grew out of New York hip-hop dress; pair a set geometric wordmark with a hand-drawn graffiti piece for a back print, but keep the logo flat and centred so the tag reads as the decoration and the box as the brand.

Contrasts

Shanghai Modern × Socialist Realist Propaganda Poster

AaAaLimelight + Zen Kaku Gothic New
Form
Naturalistic depiction, borders & frames
Composition
Diagonal axis, full bleed
Surface
Painterly brushwork

After 1949 the same painters and rubbed-watercolour technique served propaganda; compare how one rendering style sells glamour versus ideology.

Contrasts

Art Nouveau × Skønvirke

AaAaFederant + Libre Caslon Text
Form
Whiplash line, biomorphic curves
Composition
Central symmetry, horror vacui
Surface
Flat

Shares the hand-lettering and abundance but swaps the whiplash line and the female figure for blunt abstract masses; set side by side they show the heavy Danish variant.

Pairs well

Literatura de Cordel Woodcut × Risograph

AaAaInter Tight + Libre Caslon Text
Form
Stylised figuration, distortion & exaggeration
Composition
Framed panels, central symmetry
Surface
Misregistration & overprint, grain & noise

Print a cordel-style woodcut on a riso in one ink on tinted stock to keep the pocket-chapbook economy for zines and poetry pamphlets.

Contrasts

Glitch Art × Grunge Typography

AaAaRock Salt + Space Mono
Form
Rectilinear, non-representational
Composition
Broken grid, collage & layering
Surface
Glitch, grain & noise

Grunge scanned in photocopier grain and dirt and layered type on the Mac; glitch art breaks the file and lets the codec make the damage. Pick analogue distress or digital failure deliberately rather than stacking both.

How

How a combination is put together

Each style in the atlas is a set of design choices. A combination weighs how strongly each style speaks in five parts of a design: the type, the colour, the forms, the composition (layout and space) and the surface. Each part comes from the style with the stronger say in it, and each style gives at least two, so neither swallows the other.

The display face comes from the style that gives the type, the text face from the other. The palette takes its ground and leading colours from the style that gives the colour, with a counter-accent from the other, and its ink always reads on its ground. Where one style uses what the other avoids, the combination says so: in a contrast, that tension is the point.

The faces are open fonts standing in for each style’s own type, often hand-drawn or commercial. Each card’s drawing is made from the recipe, not copied from any work; where a card has an image, it was generated by AI from the same recipe and checked against it, and it is not a real or historical work. To try a pairing yourself, mix the styles and make an image of it.
