Text · Chicano Screenprint Poster
The screenprinted poster of the Chicano Movement and its heirs, made from the mid-1960s in community workshops across California and the Southwest for farmworker strikes and boycotts, teatro, dances, anti-war marches and immigrant rights. Flat opaque inks, posterised portraits and bilingual slogans recast Mexican icons (the UFW eagle, the Virgin of Guadalupe, Posada's calaveras, Mexica glyphs) for the US barrio, often by parodying American packaging.

Use it with care
Chicano Screenprint Poster: The Virgin of Guadalupe is a devotional image for many Mexicans and Chicanos, and Chicana feminist reworkings of her have met protest. Mexica glyphs and calendar imagery carry Indigenous meaning, and the UFW black eagle is the union's own emblem, not a free motif. Use them with community context, credit the movement, and commission Chicanx printmakers rather than lifting the look for marketing.
Chilean Unidad Popular & Nueva Canción Graphics: The Brigada Ramona Parra still paints and remains closely tied to Chile's Communist Youth and Communist Party, and the Larrea office's posters and sleeves are living designers' work: Vicente Larrea publicly called the 2022 Rechazo campaign's reuse of 'La felicidad de Chile comienza por los niños' a plagiarism. Víctor Jara was killed after the 1973 coup and brigade members were persecuted. Credit the makers and ask the brigade or the office before quoting their work, rather than stripping it into generic retro-revolutionary styling.

With Chicano Screenprint Poster
- Corporate Identity Modernism Contrasts · Chicano parody works by quoting the clean corporate mark and corrupting it; study the brand's grammar before you subvert it.
- Cuban Revolutionary Poster (OSPAAAL & ICAIC) Pairs well · Both are solidarity screenprints; borrow OSPAAAL's single bold image and add Chicano bilingual wordplay and barrio iconography.
- Mexican Popular Graphics (Posada) Pairs well · Posada's calaveras are a shared ancestor; mix his relief skeletons with flat screen colour for Día de Muertos work with a political edge.
- Mixteca-Puebla Codex Painting Pairs well · Chicano screenprinters reclaimed Mexica glyphs and calendar imagery for the movement; when contour-and-flat-colour glyphs meet a modern poster, follow their example of community context and credit. Mexica (Aztec) glyphs are a different source from these Mixtec and Borgia Group books: credit a codex source as such rather than folding it into 'Aztec'.
- AfriCOBRA Pairs well · Movement screenprints of the same years, made in and for their own communities: Chicano posters set one emblematic figure on flat colour, often parodying American packaging; AfriCOBRA packs the figure into a lettered, many-coloured field and stays sincere. Pair them, as both pair with the Panthers, for coalition work.
- Fania and Nuyorican Salsa LP Sleeves Pairs well · Another US Latino graphic voice; borrow its community iconography.
- Puerto Rican Silkscreen Poster (DIVEDCO & ICP) Pairs well · Two Spanish-language screenprint traditions of the Americas; add Chicano bilingual slogans and posterised portraits to Puerto Rican letrismo for community event posters.
- Lotería Card Imagery (Mexican Lotería) Pairs well · Chicano artists from Carmen Lomas Garza's 1972 tablas onward redraw the lotería card as a sign of Mexican-American home life; frame a screenprinted slogan or portrait as a numbered, named card to borrow that recognition.
With Chilean Unidad Popular
- Socialist Realist Propaganda Poster Contrasts · Against academic painted realism, the brigades reduced figures to flat colour and black line any team could repeat; set the two side by side to show party art without the easel.
- Cuban Revolutionary Poster (OSPAAAL & ICAIC) Pairs well · Vicente Larrea named Cuban posters among his influences; take OSPAAAL's single emblematic image and give it the Chilean black contour and hand-drawn letters.
- International Typographic Style Contrasts · Hand-drawn letters and irregular contours against the neutral grotesque and grid; use the Chilean mode where a cause needs warmth rather than neutrality.
- Hand-Painted Signage & Vernacular Lettering Pairs well · Both are brush-painted street lettering with reinforced outlines; borrow the sign writer's clean letter for a slogan wall that reads at walking pace.
- Lira Popular (Chilean Illustrated Verse Broadsheets) Pairs well · Set a flat-colour Unidad Popular poster beside a black woodcut frieze and ruled verse columns for a Chilean design that spans popular print and political modernism.
- Chilean Estallido Social Graphics (Revuelta Popular of 2019–20) Contrasts · Víctor Jara's songs and portraits returned to the walls in 2019, but the Unidad Popular's party brigades and Larrea sleeves painted a planned, utopian Chile in flat Pop colours, while the revolt's anonymous photocopies attack power in black and one red; set them side by side to show hope organised against rage improvised.
- Pop Achorado (Peruvian Agrarian Reform Posters) Pairs well · Contemporary Andean-Pacific reform graphics with black-contoured figures and hand-drawn letters; pair a Ramona Parra emblem frieze with a Peruvian halftone campesino for a coalition poster about land and work.
