Gothic Blackletter × Vyaz
Both pack tall, upright strokes into a dark rhythm, and Shchepkin even called 17th-century vyaz the fraktur style; but blackletter darkens a whole justified page of running text, while vyaz binds one title line into ornament by joining letters on shared stems and nesting small ones between them. Use blackletter for text and vyaz for a single heading band.

Text · Gothic Blackletter
The broken scripts of the Latin West. Textualis, a book hand from the late 12th century (Rotunda its rounder Italian form), went into type with Gutenberg's 42-line Bible (Mainz, c. 1454–55); Schwabacher followed from 1472, and Fraktur was cut for Maximilian I's Prayer Book (1513). Curves break into angles; tight justified pages read as a dark, even weave with red rubrics. Fraktur set German text until the Nazi ban of 1941. Elsewhere it had long become a display letter, and today signals age, gravity or menace on mastheads, beer labels, metal logos and cholo lettering.
Libre Caslon Text; Gothic Blackletter used Gutenberg's 42-line Bible textura and Schwabacher

The colours
The ground and leading colours come from Gothic Blackletter, with a counter-accent from Vyaz. The ink reads on the ground at 4.5:1 or more.

Use it with care
Gothic Blackletter & Fraktur Tradition: Blackletter carries political weight in German-speaking countries: the Nazi regime pushed Fraktur as the German script in its first years before banning it in January 1941 as supposed 'Schwabacher Jewish letters', and neo-Nazis still use broken scripts. In the United States, too, certain blackletter faces are associated with hate groups, on tattoos and clothing. Check how a blackletter wordmark will read, especially for anything German, national or political. Cholo placas are territorial inscriptions of Los Angeles Latino street writing with their own codes: do not copy a real neighbourhood's placa or roll call, and commission or credit Chicano letterers (such as Chaz Bojórquez) rather than borrowing their menace as decoration.
Vyaz (Ornamental Slavonic Lettering): Most vyaz carries sacred text: prayers, holy names, the titles of Gospels and service books, and inscriptions on icons, bells, church vessels, shrouds and graves. Do not fill a band with invented pseudo-Cyrillic or scramble real Church Slavonic as texture, keep holy names and prayers off throwaway products, and have any text written or checked by a reader of Church Slavonic. For Old Believers the pre-reform book and its lettering remain a matter of faith, so credit and involve their communities rather than lifting their headings as decoration. Vyaz is not only Russian: Bulgarian and Serbian scribes used it before Russia, Romanian scribes from the 15th century, and western and south-western Rus' in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (today's Belarus and Ukraine, with Supraśl in Poland) kept its own plant-derived manner, so credit the book culture a model comes from. Since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, check whether your audience will read Old Russian display lettering as Russian state or nationalist branding; vyaz is also part of Belarusian and Ukrainian book and icon heritage, so ask how that audience reads it rather than assuming either.

More combinations
With Gothic Blackletter
- Arts & Crafts Movement Pairs well · Morris's Kelmscott Press revived gothic type (Troy and Chaucer) inside dense woodcut borders; join the broken letter to foliate frames and handmade paper for a medieval, hand-made book.
- Die Neue Typographie Contrasts · Its flush-left sans-serif page on an asymmetric axis is everything the centred, justified blackletter block is not; set the two side by side to stage the argument between tradition and modernity.
- Graffiti & Hip-Hop Graphics Pairs well · Old English letters run through Los Angeles cholo writing into later street lettering; give a hand-drawn textura wordmark aerosol fills, outlines and drop shadows for street weight.
- Renaissance Book Typography Contrasts · Its historical rival: the light, round, open humanist roman page against the dark, broken, woven gothic one. Drop one blackletter title or initial into an Aldine-style page for a deliberate clash of eras.
- Acid Graphics / New Ugly Pairs well · Its club-poster revival: acid graphics mixes blackletter with liquid chrome, ultra-wide grotesques and pixel faces. Render one broken-letter wordmark in chrome on black and leave the parchment, rubrics and justified page behind.
- Victorian Letterpress & Wood Type Pairs well · English proclamations and notices kept black letter for gravity; set one blackletter line among slab and Tuscan wood type to lend a playbill or notice an official, old-world voice.
- Gothic Book of Hours (Illuminated Devotional Book) Pairs well · Compare the shared Gothic text block, then distinguish the book-of-hours page by its coordinated miniatures, graded initials and marginal programme; a blackletter wordmark alone does not reproduce this system.
- Pixação (São Paulo Tag Reto) Pairs well · Tag reto descends from gothic and runic forms by way of metal logos; set a textura line above a row of straight, pointed tag-reto letters, both in black, to show the lineage from the book page to the façade.
With Vyaz
- Mir iskusstva Book Art Pairs well · Bilibin's circle drew titles and initials in an Old Russian manner into bordered fairy-tale books; put a newly drawn vyaz title under a folk-ornament headpiece for a Russian Revival page rather than copying a liturgical heading.
- International Typographic Style Contrasts · Its opposite: airy, flush-left sans-serif on a grid against a dense, centred band of stretched calligraphic letters and plant filler; a single vyaz title can warm an otherwise strict grid.
- Square Kufic (Bannāʾī) Contrasts · Both turn sacred words into a dense band that reads first as pattern, but square Kufic snaps letters to an orthogonal grid of equal stroke and gap, while vyaz stretches free pen-drawn letters upward and plugs the gaps with plant filler; choose the grid or the calligraphic interlace, and never blend the two sacred scripts into a generic 'ancient' texture.
- Phototype Expressive Typography (Lubalin & U&lc) Pairs well · Lubalin's phototype logotypes also merge neighbouring letters into ligatures and crowd them into a single shape; borrow vyaz's shared stems and nested small letters for a Cyrillic logotype, and keep it to one or two words so it stays readable.
- Edo-moji Commercial Lettering (Kanteiryū, Yose-moji, Sumō-ji) Contrasts · Both are crowded display hands that leave no gap in the band they fill, but edo-moji fills it with plump, heavy strokes, as in Kanteiryū or sumō-ji, and vyaz with tall, interlocked stems and plant filler: two answers to the same demand for a full, dense line, so pick weight or height rather than mixing them.
- Armenian Manuscript Illumination Pairs well · Another Eastern Christian book culture in which titles and initials carry the ornament; set a vyaz title in gold and azurite beside a canon-table arcade to compare a heading built from joined letters with an initial built from birds.
