Pop Achorado × Socialist Realist Propaganda Poster

Ruiz Durand sought a revolutionary image that avoided Russian and Chinese models; set the painted heroic worker against the comic-strip, dot-screened campesino to show propaganda that borrowed from pop instead of the academy.

Text · Socialist Realist Propaganda Poster

The official art doctrine of the Soviet Union from 1932, later exported across the socialist world, which replaced avant-garde experiment with legible, heroic realism 'national in form, socialist in content'. Its posters show idealised workers, soldiers and leaders on rising diagonals and low horizons, bathed in red, with bold slogans promising a radiant future; in China they merged with New Year print and calendar-poster conventions.

Use it with care

Pop Achorado (Peruvian Agrarian Reform Posters): These are a military government's propaganda, built on Ruiz Durand's photographs of real Andean and northern-coast peasants at the moment they were receiving expropriated land; the reform's outcome is still contested in Peru and the Túpac Amaru II emblem remains a live political symbol. Ruiz Durand is a living artist: credit him and the DPDRA team, and do not reduce the defiant campesino to generic 'Andean' retro decoration or attach it to a cause that drops the land question.
