Text · Minjung Woodcut Graphics
The reproducible graphic branch of Minjung misul (people's art), South Korea's art of the 1980s democracy and labour movements. After the Gwangju Uprising of May 1980, artists such as Oh Yoon and Hong Sung-dam took up the woodcut for the movement: bold, succinct black-line figures of workers, farmers, miners and dancers, cut in wood and reused on poetry-book covers, pamphlets, posters, chest badges and enlarged painted geolgae banners for rallies.
Archivo; Minjung Woodcut Graphics used Hangul titles and slogans carved into the woodblock and Brush-written Hangul slogans on painted geolgae banners and posters

Use it with care
Minjung Woodcut Graphics (Korean People's Art): Minjung prints were made for a living movement and many record the dead of the Gwangju Uprising; their makers or estates hold the rights, and the movement's exhibitions met police suppression (The Power of People in Their 20s, 1985). Their borrowings from shamanic gut, mask dance and Buddhist painting carry ritual meaning in Korea: do not lift those motifs as decorative 'Korean folk' texture, do not turn Gwangju imagery into generic protest branding, and credit the artists by name. The genome describes the reproducible woodcut branch of a wider movement that also painted, made banners, comics and photomontage.

With Minjung Woodcut Graphics
- Taller de Gráfica Popular Contrasts · Nearest in the atlas, and the closest Mexican print lineage to the Mexican Muralism that MMCA names as a source: both cut black-line people's prints for movements, but TGP sets condensed Latin capitals and lithographs, while Minjung prints carry short Hangul slogans and dancing, ritual-derived figures, and are scaled up to geolgae banners.
- Chinese Modern Woodcut Movement Pairs well · MMCA names it as a source; keep its self-cut black line but trade the gouged diagonal shock for Minjung's frontal, dancing figures.
- South African Resistance Poster Pairs well · Exact contemporaries in another democracy struggle; set a carved figure beside community screenprint colour for solidarity graphics.
- Chaekgeori & Minhwa Screen Painting Pairs well · Minjung artists studied folk painting; borrow minhwa's flat colour and folk motifs to warm a black-and-white print.
With Socialist Realist Propaganda Poster
- Cuban Revolutionary Poster (OSPAAAL & ICAIC) Contrasts · Cuban designers rejected Soviet realism for pop and op graphics; compare them to decide whether a cause needs heroes or wit.
- Taller de Gráfica Popular Pairs well · TGP shared the social commitment with a carved linocut line; borrow its grit to make heroic imagery feel grassroots.
- WPA Silkscreen Posters Pairs well · Both mobilised a 1930s public; combine WPA flat silkscreen colour with heroic low-angle diagonals for civic campaigns.
- Russian Constructivism Contrasts · Same revolution, opposite means: set Constructivist abstraction beside heroic realism to show the 1932 turn from experiment to doctrine.
- Shanghai Modern & Yuefenpai Contrasts · After 1949 the same painters and rubbed-watercolour technique served propaganda; compare how one rendering style sells glamour versus ideology.
- Chinese National-Style Animation (Shanghai Animation Film Studio) Contrasts · Made in the same state and decades, and like it an official art: the national style was pursued with state backing and its fables carried lessons. But where socialist realism pictured idealised heroes in legible, illusionistic realism, the studio found its forms in ink painting, cut paper, opera and murals; set one against the other to separate a painted, traditional idiom from heroic realism.
- ROSTA Windows Contrasts · The heroic, naturalistic painting that displaced it in the 1930s is the exact opposite of its crude, satirical shorthand.
- Soviet Central Asian Ornamental Modernism Contrasts · The parent doctrine in its painted poster form, with leaders, slogans and rising diagonals, is the foil: choose ornament, folklore and a flat frontal figure where it chooses the call to arms.
