Text · Egyptian Painted Film Poster
The painted publicity of Egyptian cinema from the early talkies to the 1990s, designed outside the studios by artist-printers such as Hassan Mazhar Gassour and printed as colour lithographs in Cairo. Star portraits copied from stills float as cut-out heads above a melodramatic scene. The Arabic title is painted as a one-off calligraphic logotype whose swelling, interlocked strokes can act out the film's theme.

Use it with care
Egyptian Cigarette Packaging (Cairo Tobacco Houses): These boxes sold an Orientalist fantasy of Egypt to Western smokers: the turbaned pipe smoker and the jewelled odalisque are stereotypes, and pharaonic gods and statues were turned into trade marks, so do not reuse them as neutral 'Egyptian' decoration or as a picture of Egyptian life. The crescent and star (an Ottoman and Egyptian state emblem, now widely read as a sign of Islam) and the Arabic inscriptions are state and religious signs, not ornament: do not scatter them or fake Arabic lettering as exotic texture. Tobacco branding is now restricted by advertising bans and plain-packaging laws in many countries, so do not use the style to make real cigarette packs look attractive, and Camel is a live trade mark: draw new marks rather than copying any brand's crest or name.

With Egyptian Cigarette Packaging
- Cuban Tobacco Lithography (Habilitaciones & Marquillas) Pairs well · Borrow the Havana labels' embossed medals and ribbon banners for a richer lid, but keep the Cairo tin's calm pale ground so it does not tip into clutter.
- Plain Tobacco Packaging Contrasts · Its regulatory opposite: plain packs strip out every crest, border and vignette this style uses to sell, a sharp foil for any critique of tobacco branding.
- Art Deco Pairs well · Move the border bands to stepped, sunburst Deco patterns, as the later Maspero box did, for an interwar version of the tin.
- International Typographic Style Contrasts · Set one heraldic, bordered lid against an asymmetric grotesque grid to show the jump from trading-house guarantee to objective information.
- Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphic & Register Composition Pairs well · Draw the pharaonic motifs from real register compositions rather than souvenir clichés to give the vignettes more weight and accuracy.
With Egyptian Painted Film Poster
- Hand-Painted Bollywood Poster Pairs well · Share floating star heads and painted title logos across a film-heritage programme, setting Arabic calligraphic titles beside Devanagari and Nastaʿlīq ones.
- Belle Époque Lithographic Poster Pairs well · Both are colour-lithographed street posters; borrow the Belle Époque's flat colour and single animated figure to calm a crowded star montage.
- Cairo–Beirut Arab Modernist Book & Periodical Design Pairs well · Combine the cinema poster's glamorous painted title with the book designers' rough line and folk borders for a Cairo identity that spans screen and print.
- International Typographic Style Contrasts · Place one painted Arabic title and star head on a neutral grid with grotesque credits to make the clash of melodrama and order the subject.
- Hong Kong Cinema Poster (Shaw Brothers and Golden Harvest era) Pairs well · Another painted studio-era film poster; borrow its heroic face scale and melodrama.
- Giallo Mondadori Covers (I Libri Gialli) Pairs well · Both paint a lurid, cinematic moment of crime or melodrama for a mass public; the poster's calligraphic logotype and floating heads can loosen the giallo's sober capitals.
- Thai Hand-Painted Film Poster and Billboard Pairs well · Another painted cinema-advertising tradition built on a crowded montage of faces, a parallel rather than a documented influence; borrow its scale contrast between star and scene.
- Yeşilçam Film Poster (Turkish Hand-Painted Afiş) Pairs well · Both put painted star heads above a melodramatic scene. Pair them to compare Latin-script Istanbul lettering with Arabic calligraphic titles.
