South African Resistance Poster × Extinction Rebellion Graphics
Both are cheap workshop prints with heavy capitals and an organisation's emblem; XR adds a centrally specified twelve-colour kit where the struggle posters kept to one to three hand-cut inks.

Text · South African Resistance Poster
The posters of the struggle against apartheid, from the exiled Medu Art Ensemble in Gaborone to the community workshops that served the United Democratic Front and the unions in the 1980s. Low-tech silkscreen from hand-cut stencils was chosen on purpose: cheap, quick to teach, workable without electricity and often illegal. One to three flat inks carry heavy hand-lettered slogans, organisation logos, fists, crowds and photographs converted to line.

Use it with care
South African Resistance Poster: The photograph of the dying Hector Pieterson (Sam Nzima, 16 June 1976) and the portraits of detainees and the dead show real people whose families and communities still remember them, and ANC, UDF and COSATU colours and the spear and shield are the marks of living organisations. Use them with context and permission rather than as generic protest styling.
Extinction Rebellion Graphics: Extinction Rebellion is a living movement and the Extinction Symbol is credited to the artist ESP, who lends it to XR only for non-commercial use; XR says it will pursue anyone selling merchandise with it. Do not put the symbol, the XR logotype or a close imitation of the kit on products, fundraising, advertising or brand campaigns, and do not dress a company's climate message in XR's look to borrow its credibility.

With South African Resistance Poster
- Cuban Revolutionary Poster (OSPAAAL & ICAIC) Contrasts · State-funded Cuban posters are polychrome and conceptual where these are literal, text-heavy and cheap; pick by whether the audience needs an idea or an instruction.
- WPA Silkscreen Posters Pairs well · Another public-service silkscreen culture of flat inks and plain capitals; borrow its calmer layout when a meeting poster needs to inform rather than shout.
- Rorke's Drift Linocut Contrasts · Same country, overlapping and then following it (1978–1994): screenprinted slogans and emblems for mass protest against small, hand-printed editions that tell a story; use the poster to mobilise and the linocut to bear witness.
- Atelier Populaire (May '68 Screenprint Poster) Pairs well · Both chose hand-made silkscreen because it was cheap, quick and teachable to non-artists; borrow the struggle posters' organisation emblems and second ink when a campaign must stay recognisable beyond one day's slogan.
- Drum Magazine & Sophiatown Photojournalism Contrasts · The later South African struggle poster argues with screenprinted slogans, emblems and drawn figures; Drum argued through candid photography and urban glamour inside a commercial magazine.
- See Red Women's Workshop Feminist Screenprints Pairs well · Community silkscreen for movements; add its heavy slogans and organisation emblems to See Red's drawn everyday scenes.
- South African Vernacular Design (Ijusi) Contrasts · The struggle posters spoke with one voice in two or three inks; Ijusi, after 1994, mixes many voices, languages and colours. Quote the stencilled slogans as history, not as decoration.
- Minjung Woodcut Graphics (Korean People's Art) Pairs well · Exact contemporaries in another democracy struggle; set a carved figure beside community screenprint colour for solidarity graphics.
With Extinction Rebellion Graphics
- Pop Art Graphics Pairs well · The twelve bright colours were influenced by Eduardo Paolozzi; push a slogan poster further towards British Pop with fluorescent flat grounds and one playful image.
- Victorian Letterpress & Wood Type Pairs well · FUCXED imitates old wood type and Burrill printed XR slogans from real wood type; pair the bright XR grounds with a jobbing printer's condensed wood letters for a hand-set protest poster.
- Corporate Identity Modernism Contrasts · XR borrows a corporate identity's tools (one symbol, a fixed logotype, a colour palette, a design guide) and turns them into a free, hand-printed kit that bans commercial use.
- Stencil Street Art Pairs well · ESP spread the symbol as a street artist before XR adopted it, chalking it on Brick Lane and putting up posters and tiles around East London; pair XR's one-colour emblem and short slogans with stencil street art's hard-edged sprayed figures for walls and pavements.
- Solidarność & Polish Underground Graphics Pairs well · A later movement that also lives on one simple mark anyone can copy by hand; pair a single shared emblem with locally made, cheaply printed posters to keep a campaign recognisable without central design.
- ACT UP & Gran Fury AIDS Activist Graphics Pairs well · A later movement that again reduces its cause to one emblem and a fixed set of slogans in heavy capitals; pair XR's flat colour grounds with ACT UP's facts in small print when a protest poster must both rally and inform.
- Belarusian Protest Illustration (2020 Uprising) Contrasts · Compare a prescribed wood-type and woodcut identity with an illustrator-led shared vocabulary: Belarusian examples do not require XR's oversized headline, carved texture, print workshop or fixed logo. Shared protest tone and few-colour printing are not evidence of descent.
- Solarpunk Contrasts · Both answer the climate crisis: XR shouts alarm in woodcut and flat spot colour; solarpunk paints the hopeful world after it. Pair them for campaigns that move from warning to vision.
