# Y2K Futurism

> The optimistic, chrome-plated vision of the future that surrounded the turn of the millennium, spread by consumer electronics, music videos, games, fashion and dot-com branding. Translucent candy-coloured plastics, liquid-metal and bubble 3D renders, lens flares, wide techno sans-serifs and icy silver-and-blue palettes sold the digital age as sleek, fluid and weightless, until the dot-com crash dimmed it.

- Period: 1997–2005
- Where: Global / networked
- Origin: US, Western European and Japanese consumer electronics, music video, games and dot-com branding
- Branch: Digital native
- Also known as: Y2K aesthetic, Millennium futurism, Cyber Y2K
- Page: https://stylogeny.com/styles/y2k-futurism/

## How it works

- Render key shapes and lettering in chrome, liquid metal or glossy translucent plastic, with sharp specular highlights and reflections.
- Favour blob, droplet and capsule forms over hard corners.
- Set type in wide, extended or techno display faces, often small and tracked out beside a large chrome logotype.
- Build icy palettes of silver, white and electric blue, accented with translucent lime, tangerine or bubblegum pink.
- Float objects in an infinite white or deep-space void with lens flares, wireframe grids, orbit lines and HUD-style data overlays.
