# Ornamental Romantasy Book Cover

> The cover of a romantasy (fantasy-romance) novel in which a large, often embellished title sits among story-specific foliage, creatures, weapons and emblematic objects, commonly as a border. Book Riot (2024) says there is almost always something floral or foliage-like, usually as a border, with skulls and weapons common additions; Reedsy describes the aesthetic as maximalist, with jewel-toned palettes and gold foil. No single colour or finish is universal: the cool watercolour All the Stars and Teeth and a banana-yellow paperback show the range.

- Period: 2024–present
- Where: North America, Western Europe, Global / networked
- Origin: Contemporary English-language fantasy-romance publishing and its international cover illustrators; no single birthplace is established. 2024 is the date of the Book Riot article used as the earliest source here, not an invention date. The influences listed are an analyst's visual comparison; no source states them as documented lineage.

## How it works

- Make the title the centre of the cover: set it large, shaded or embellished, and build the composition around it.
- Frame the title with a floral or foliage border, often mixed with bones, wings, creatures or weapons, instead of placing two lovers in a scene.
- Carry the plot in emblems: a skull, a crown, a bejeweled weapon, a boat or a mermaid tail, drawn as ornament rather than narrative action.
- Choose a rich, often jewel-toned palette, but vary it: one layout can be issued in different colourways, as The Hurricane Wars appears in dark purple and gold and in banana yellow.
- Prefer story-specific motifs over generic ornament, so the border tells what this book contains.
