# Ndebele Geometric Painting

> The mural tradition of Southern Ndebele women, who paint homestead walls and gateways, and later canvases and objects, with bold, symmetrical geometric designs. Thick black outlines contain flat fields of bright commercial colour on white, and stepped gables, chevrons, razor blades, light bulbs and letters are abstracted into a vocabulary shared with Ndebele beadwork.

- Period: 1940–present
- Where: Sub-Saharan Africa
- Origin: Southern Ndebele homesteads, Mpumalanga and Gauteng, South Africa
- Branch: Traditions & vernacular
- Also known as: Ndebele house painting, Ndebele murals, Southern Ndebele wall art

## Use it with care

Ndebele painting is a living practice of named women artists and their communities, and its motifs carry clan, marital and initiation associations. Commission or collaborate with Ndebele artists and credit them by name rather than lifting the patterns as generic 'African' decoration.

## How it works

- Outline every shape with a thick black contour, then fill it with flat, unshaded colour.
- Organise the wall symmetrically around the doorway or a central axis, repeating panels on either side.
- Build motifs from stepped, angular geometry and abstract everyday objects (razor blades, lamps, roofs) into it.
- Set bright primaries and secondaries on a white ground, letting the white separate the colours.
- Paint freehand and accept slight irregularities of line.
