# Matatu & Nganya Art

> The commissioned livery of Kenya's privately owned minibus taxis, at its most elaborate the Nairobi nganya. Garage painters spray and airbrush near-photographic portraits of rappers, footballers, politicians and film heroes across the sides and rear window. They add a vehicle name and hip-hop catchphrases in shaded display capitals, brand logos and club crests in paint or computer-cut stickers. LEDs, video screens and a loud sound system complete it, so the bus wins young passengers. Banned under the 2004 Michuki rules, it returned openly in the mid-2010s.

- Period: 1990–present
- Where: Sub-Saharan Africa
- Origin: Privately owned matatu minibuses and buses of Nairobi, Kenya (also Mombasa), decorated to the owner's order in body-and-paint garages such as Moha Grafix in Eastleigh, Nairobi; known as 'matatu graffiti' and described as an offshoot of mural graffiti
- Branch: Traditions & vernacular
- Also known as: Nganya, Matatu graffiti, Matwana art, Manyanga, Pimped matatu

## Use it with care

Matatu art is the living trade of named Kenyan garage painters and the culture of the young crews and passengers who ride the routes, so commission and credit Kenyan painters rather than lifting a particular vehicle's design, name or a painter's signature. Its portraits show real people (musicians, athletes, politicians), so do not reproduce a real person's likeness or a brand's logo in commercial work without rights, and never present a generated image as a real nganya. Kenya's police chief has said he loves art "but not one that celebrates gangsters or violence", and the Matatu Owners Association bars insulting, inciting, pornographic, alcohol and violence content: do not use it as shorthand for lawlessness or as a generic "chaotic African bus" backdrop.

## How it works

- Treat the vehicle as one continuous canvas: paint the sides and back edge to edge so that no plain panel is left, keeping the windows and the sacco name clear as the transport authority NTSA required in 2018 (Wango's 2020 study records portraits that filled the entire rear window, so that it no longer served as a window).
- Make a near-photographic portrait of a hero figure, styled as a rapper, footballer, politician or film star (on real vehicles, global celebrities such as Tupac, Kobe Bryant or Obama), the largest element, sprayed or airbrushed with modelled light and foreshortening and fitted to the shape of the body panel.
- Give the vehicle a name and paint it like a brand: a single word of luxury or hype ('Ferrari', 'Lamborghini', 'Catalyst') or a catchphrase ('Street King', 'Cash Money') in outlined, shaded, three-dimensional display capitals.
- Use saturated colour in smooth airbrushed fades on a glossy body, and borrow the currency of sport, fashion and film through team colours, badge-like crests and title-style lettering (real vehicles carry actual club crests, brand logos and film titles such as Manchester United, Puma and Titanic).
- Extend the design into light and sound: LED strips, interior lights, banks of screens playing music videos and a loud sound system, so the bus competes for passengers by day and at night.
- Speak to the youth on the route in their own code of hip-hop and dancehall catchphrases, quotes from icons and taunts at haters, which the ordinary passer-by may not recognise.
