# Forum Signature Art (Sig & C4D Render Graphics)

> A banner image attached under every forum post as a personal stamp. It is a single Photoshop composite: a cut-out 'render' of a game, anime or film character or an athlete, set against a background smudged and stretched from the same picture, layered with semi-transparent abstract Cinema 4D renders, fractal flames and grunge or 'tech' brushes, pulled into one tint and framed by a thin border. The user's name is set small. Weekly 'Signature of the Week' contests and shared tutorials drove the craft. Its dates (2004 to 2013) are evidence dates, not firm limits.

- Period: 2004–2013
- Where: Global / networked, North America, Western Europe
- Origin: Amateur, often teenage Photoshop users on web forums, gaming-clan boards and dedicated 'GFX' communities such as GFXVoid.com (online by December 2004; by 2006 a vBulletin forum with 'Signatures and Avatars', 'SOTW' and 'Battlegrounds' boards and tutorial boards for Photoshop, Cinema 4D, Bryce, Apophysis and Chaoscope); 2004 is GFXVoid's earliest archive and 2013 the latest cited weekly contest, so the practice probably began earlier and went on later
- Branch: Digital native
- Also known as: Sig art, Forum signatures, Sigs, Signature banners, C4D/smudge sigs, GFX (forum graphics)

## Use it with care

Sigs were built from ripped official art, photographs and other members' renders and brushes; the communities themselves policed 'rips'. When reviving the look, use licensed or self-made figures and resources rather than lifting characters or another maker's work.

## How it works

- Build the whole banner around one cut-out render: a character, athlete or celebrity lifted from official art, placed off-centre as the only focal point.
- Make the background from the render itself: smudge, pixel-stretch and blur copies of it into streaks of light and colour.
- Stack semi-transparent abstract 3D renders, fractals and grunge or tech brushes in screen, lighten and overlay modes until the space reads as glowing depth.
- Pull every layer into one colour family with a gradient map or colour balance, and add a light source or flare.
- Keep the type tiny and quiet: the username and a short tagline in a capitals-only bitmap pixel font at its native size, or a thin, widely tracked sans.
- Close the composite with a 1-pixel or 'tech' border so it sits as a finished plate under the post.
