# Fania and Nuyorican Salsa LP Sleeves

> The cover language of New York's salsa boom: a record label's sleeves sold a scene and a roster of stars with inked and illustrated bandleader portraits alongside studio photography, comic-strip gags, mugshot and crowd montage, and chunky outlined hand-lettered titles. Crowded, frontal and saturated, with in-group humour, it spoke to a Nuyorican and Caribbean audience in its own pop idiom. The Wanted and mugshot jokes were played by the community's own artists and musicians on stereotypes about Latinos; the idiom should not be reduced to ethnic iconography.

- Period: 1964–1985
- Where: Latin America & Caribbean, North America
- Origin: New York City: Fania Records (founded 1964 by Johnny Pacheco and Jerry Masucci) and its Puerto Rican art director Izzy Sanabria, who also ran Latin NY magazine (1973-1985). Sanabria's earlier work and Alegre-era sleeves such as Pacheco y su Charanga (1961) predate the Fania start date; sources differ on the founding year (Wikipedia 1964, Lambiek 1963). The sleeve language was made by Puerto Rican and wider Latin community designers, artists and bandleaders
- Branch: Counterculture
- Also known as: Salsa album cover art, Latin NY cover art, Fania cover art, Izzy Sanabria covers

## How it works

- Put the bandleader's name and face at the front, large, and sell the scene around them.
- Borrow a popular genre (wanted poster, comic strip, movie one-sheet) and make the joke part of the cover.
- Favour drawn or inked portraits with heightened colour and exaggerated features, alongside photographic portraits and montage.
- Stack chunky outlined hand-lettered titles behind and around the figures.
- Fill the frame with saturated colour and barrio, Caribbean and street iconography until it feels like a crowd.
- Use the sleeve as a billboard for the label: credit the roster, the band and the next record.
