# Afrofuturist Design

> A visual language of Black futures that fuses African and diasporic iconography (pyramids and ankhs, Adinkra and Nsibidi glyphs, textile patterning) with spacecraft, cosmic fields and technology. From Sun Ra's Saturn records and Parliament-Funkadelic's comic-book sleeves to the Wakanda of Black Panther, it uses regal central figures, jewel and metallic colour on deep-space grounds, and pattern as technology to imagine liberation beyond history.

- Period: 1970–present
- Where: North America, Sub-Saharan Africa, Global / networked
- Origin: African American music culture (Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit, Los Angeles) and African and diasporic art worlds
- Branch: Counterculture

## Use it with care

Afrofuturism is a self-authored vision of Black futures that draws on meaning-bearing symbols (Adinkra, Nsibidi, Kemetic and textile motifs) tied to specific peoples. Use glyphs for what they mean rather than as generic 'tribal' texture, and commission, credit or collaborate with Black and African designers.

## How it works

- Place a Black protagonist at the centre as a regal, heroic or cosmic figure, often frontal and symmetrical.
- Fuse ancestral symbols (pyramids, ankhs, Adinkra and Nsibidi glyphs, textile patterns) with spacecraft, circuitry and chrome.
- Set gold, purple and jewel tones against deep black space, with orbits, halos and starfields.
- Use pattern as technology: let textile geometry become armour, architecture and interface.
- Build lettering from African writing systems and hand-drawn titling rather than generic sci-fi fonts.
